Kennedy’s Restaurant @ Dataran Sunway

Kennedys-9

American food, how should we define it really? I have never been to the USA so I can’t be a good judge on what really constitutes good American food except that it should involve steak, lots of fries and a big portion! Save from the big portion part (to cater to the local’s portion) , I have found a restaurant that serves a hearty steak and generous amount of fries with reasonable prices. Also, if a name like Kennedy’s doesn’t scream American enough, I don’t know what would.

Interior of Kennedy’s restaurant
Situated in the food haven of Kota Damansara is this relatively (around 3 months’ old) new restaurant that prides itself with not only American food, but American wallpaper, comics, right down to the American colours of red and blue on the wall! Of all the decoration around, I loved the New York wall paper at the back the most! Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it is one of the cities in my wish list.

Welcome to Las Vegas
Decoration aside, we ordered some hearty good-old American food for our dinner. Our starter was Chili Con Carne, a thick stew of kidney beans, minced beef cooked with some herbs and spices. Don’t be deterred by the name ‘chili’ for there was no chili used in the process! This dish was very tasty, savoury and slightly sour, with a thick texture. Upon chatting with the chef, we found out that the secret ingredient in this dish was Malt! Yes, real Malt beverage (Malta) was mixed in the sauce to produce the hearty and creamy concoction that was good on its own, but also delicious with crackers.

Soup of the Day – Leek and Potato (RM6.50) *Sample size shown

We also tried the Soup of the Day, which happened to be made from Leek and Potato that night. I am personally not a fan of potato (except if they are served in the form of fries ) so I wasn’t too keen on trying this soup. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by how superbly smooth and creamy the soup turned out to be! I half-expected the soup to be a diluted version of mashed potato but it was much better than that. The leek brought out a nice twist to the potato flavour, giving it a nice balance so that the soup didn’t turn out to be too heavy or rich.

Beef Cheese and Mushroom (RM28)
For mains, we had the Beef Cheese and Mushroom, which was a slab of grilled sirloin with mushroom and cheese, served with a side of vegetables and fries. The size of the sirloin was considerably huge but not very thickly cut. It was done medium well, so there was still a hint of pink in the middle – not bloody, but pink. The steak was tender and juicy, mostly from the juices of the mushroom and the moisture from the beef itself. I enjoyed the creamy mushroom sauce which was really delicious, but Saucer thought the sauce overpowered the original taste of the steak. Well, to each its own.

Mix Grill, RM26.50
What was more fascinating to me was the Mix Grill, which was a platter of lamb chops, chicken and king prawn grilled with BBQ sauce. The lamb chops and chicken were tender and well-marinated, but the star had to be the home-made BBQ sauce that was coating them nicely. The dark and shiny, almost caramelized layer of BBQ sauce was savoury, slightly sweet and very delicious! I guess the chef knew we would fall in love with the sauce that’s why he even provided a small bowl of it at the side, just in case. The picture below can’t tell clearly but there were actually 2 slabs of lamb chops at the bottom, a chicken chop (thigh) in the middle and a prawn on top. Saucer adored the lamb chops to bits and he finished them in no time!
