With the Ramadan month fast approaching, many fasting Muslims are probably planning where to go to break their fast. Fortunately in Kuala Lumpur, one is spoilt for choices as there are many places one could go to savour halal foods. So why not go for Szechuan Cuisine that is both authentic and halal at the same time? But is it really kosher Chinese cooking? More importantly, is it affordable?

It may sound fanciful, but YES, there is a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that does exactly that, and it lies within the heart of Bangsar South at the Nexus. The Nexus is quickly becoming the next popular hangout for the discerning urbanite, with well-established names in lifestyle concept stores and restaurants enticing more and more visitors here daily. It is also here that you can find the Amber Chinese Muslim Restaurant.

The Amber Chinese Muslim Restaurant opened last year in August and had their official launch in October 2015. Originally from Lanzhou, North China, the Amber Group has been serving halal Szechuan cuisine, or “Huizu Cai” for the last 15 years. And with over 24 successful branches in China, the Amber Group is set to expand her horizons here in her adopted country Malaysia.

The restaurant itself is large and spacious, with private dining rooms and has a seating capacity of 200 persons. It is open 7 days a week, from 11.30 am to 10pm daily and aside from a crew of friendly local serving staff, the Amber KL boasts a 7-person Chef and Kitchen Team, flown all the way from China.
 
 
 
Szechuan cuisine originates from its province in Southwestern China. It features strong flavours owing to its liberal use of spices in its seasonings, particularly the Chilli Pepper and Szechuan Peppercorns (Chinese Coriander). Due to the cool climate, the people of Sichuan are fond of hot and spicy dishes with non-spicy dishes interspersed during meals. Seven essential flavours expresses Sichuan cuisine; sour, pungent, hot, sweet, bitter, aromatic, and salty.

In conjunction with the coming Ramadan, we were treated to a sampling of their Ramadan Buffet menu, which comprised of the following offerings;
Jujubes with Kidney Beans
 
Roasted Chicken Wings, Roasted Squid
 
Fried Spicy Shrimp with Fries 
 
Spicy Meat Stuffed with Egg Paste
 
Braised Lamb in Sauce 
 
Sautéed Broccoli with Carrot and Garlic
Fish Fillets Soup in Hot Chili Oil
 
Deep Fried chicken with Chili
 
Tofu with Spicy Sauce (Mapo Tofu)
 
Sautéed Chinese Cabbage
Braised Fish Balls in Soup
Fried Mushroom with Beef 
Chinese Fried Rice 
Their specialty drinks are Chinese Teas, infused with a variety of fragrant fruits, berries and flowers. A must try is the Chinese Chrysanthemum with Fruit Tea.
We found the roasted meats savoury and the dishes extremely palatable when accompanied with the Chinese Fried Rice. Of particular mention is the Braised Lamb in Sauce, which was tender and did not have a very strong lamb taste. The Sautéed Broccoli was cooked to perfection (and the first to be finished), while the Fried Mushroom with Beef was also tender and came delightful sized bites.
A signature Szechuan dish is the Fish Fillets Soup in Hot Chili Oil. Also known as “Shuizu Yu”. Tender filets of fish are first seasoned and then boiled in a bowl of hot broth. The broth itself is covered with a thick layer of chili oil and topped with dried chilies and Szechuan peppercorns. The flavours of the broth and spices are drawn up when you lift the slices of fish out from their bath, which coats the morsel and imparts a subtle aroma and the spicy taste.
