Cafe Oriental BBQ Buffet (every Saturday) @ Sabah Oriental Hotel

A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to try out their weekend Hi-Tea. It was a good experience then and decided to go for seconds. This time around we went for their BBQ Buffet dinner, and boy we had an even pleasant experience than before. It's on Groupon now, only RM36 instead of RM58 per person.

BBQ BUFFET available on every Saturday
Price at RM58 per person.

First off a look at their impressive centre spread reveal a myriad of entrees and desserts. The entrees consists of among others,  fresh shrimps,  mussels, shrimp cocktails, mini smoked salmon bruscheta, fresh garden salad and even local delicacy such as fish hinava.

The shrimps were sweet and chewey, while the salty smoked salmon makes for a good entree as well. The variety of fresh salad may not be a lot but this is quickly made up for when you step outside, where more fresh vegetables are available for on the spot stir fry, teppanyaki style.

BBQ Lamb

The Lamb packed a lot of flavour while the barbeque over open fire gives it an added woody fragrance. The seafood was also fresh and sweet, while the bbq chicken was nicely cooked through. The satay was also rather impressive with the chicken nicely marinated to leave a rather sweet and savory taste. There is also beef satay which is just as nice.

Awesome Satays....Must Try!!!

And it is at the outside main course section where we feel Cafe Oriental is a winner. 4 action counters offering (as mentioned earlier) firstly, Teppanyaki bar, where you can choose a selection of fresh vegetables and meat. The next action counter offers barbeque seafood, lamb as well as chicken. Another barbeque counter serves the mandatory Satay. Another action counter offers a variety of pasta that the chef will cook in front of you.

Step back inside and there is a totally different kind of BBQ. There is actually a chicken Shawarma roasting on a vertical rotisserie. The chicken was tasty, juicy and tender, while marinated properly to have a myriad of taste and spices. Ask the kind staff to prepare a wrap or shawarma sandwhich for you, which consists of the chicken meat, some shredded vegetables and thousand island sauce. The result is a drippingly good pita sandwhich, where the juices from the chicken and sauce just makes it an awesome Arabian staple.

The vegetable teppanyaki bar on the other hand, marries the vege with nice savoury sauce, and with garlic sauteed earlier on first, it adds an even more pleasant aroma. The pasta was also al-dante and the sauce was fragrant and tasty.

As if that wasn't enough there are also a selection of local dishes, such as chicken in prawn sauce, curry lamb, sauteed sotong and kacang tumis or stir fried long beans. We would like to highlight that the curry lamb is just knee-bucklingly good (if ever there is such a word). The meat was tender that it rips away from the bones easily while the curry is so rich in texture and taste, not to mention a variety of spices that goes on in it. Eat it with warm rice, fish cracker and popodam and you are in paradise.

After all that its good to wind down with some good desserts, sweets and pastries. There are ice cream to choose from, but we would like to direct your attention to their pastry as they are actually quite impressive. The tarts skin were crunchy and savoury which goes well with a choice of fruits drip in syrup or cream pastries.

There is even a chocolate fountain fondue where you can dip cookies and sweets to give it a chocolate delight. You are also spoilt for choices in the cake department, with carrot cake, cheese cake, chocolate cake all vying for your attention. And don't get me started with all other creams and custards in cups.
