The Sky is the Limit at SkyAvenue Mall
Back in the City in the Clouds, yours truly and Angeline came up here to enjoy the fresh cool air and to just get away from Kuala Lumpur City for a change. As a holiday destination, Resorts World Genting (RWG) attracts over 20 million visitors annually. Just think about that. That's an average of nearly 55,000 persons coming up 6,000 feet here daily!
Yeah, we were at Starbucks first, because I needed the power-up after taking on a photography assignment covering the Viper Challenge: King of the Mountain 2017 earlier in the same day.
|
This time however, we had the chance to explore the new SkyAvenue Mall at Resorts World Genting thoroughly. How did we do it? With a 36-HOUR FOOD TRAIL! Yup, we were given 36 hours to go and find 36 participating outlets in a massive food hunt. Want to know how our adventure went? Read on!
The SkyAvenue Mall is an impressive structure, being 1.434 million sq ft of gross floor area. There are five floors in all, with each offering a different experience on entertainment, dining and retailing. When this place fully opens in 2018, there will be 168 tenants and 160 brands to try.
LED Electronic Mood boards three-stories high bombard your senses the minute you enter the mall. It runs throughout the day and the immersive panoramic sight and sound will leave you nothing short of spellbound.
The first floor of SkyAvenue is a gastronomic heaven. Everything one could wish for in the F&B industry can be found here, with a good mix of quick service restaurants, cafes, food kiosks, mid-range and bespoke food outlets. There are 35 F&B tenants here which includes but not limited to Dragon-i, Din Tai Fung, Royale Vietnam, Dome, Morganfield's, Just Heavenly, Acme Bar & Coffee, Gong Cha, Kyochon 1991 and Tampopo. RWG has also invited three international F&B brands, namely London’s Burger & Lobster, the French Cafes Richard and the famous American pizzeria Motorino.
The first floor is also home to the all new Picturehouse, a retro cinema reminiscent of the old theater back in the olden days of film.
The second floor is a shopper's haven, where you can find some of the most popular luxury brands to ever grace this century. This floor will open towards 4th quarter of 2017 into 2018. The third floor on the other hand is dedicated to High Street fashion and mid to upper range retail offerings. The 51 retailers include Padini Concept Store, Giordano, Swarovski, Kiehl's, Timberland, Adidas Originals, Austin Reed, Lovisa, Esprit, DC Comics Super Heroes, Mood Board, L'Occitane, Bonia, Tissot, Shu Uemura, Muse by Watson, SK-II, Thomas Sabo, Puma, and Samsung. Swedish outfitters H&M will open in September. The third level of SkyAvenue will also offer a duty-free shopping arcade soon.
The fourth floor is where you will find the landing floor of the Awana Skyway, the resort's new cable car system, making SkyAvenue the center point of everything, bridging both the retail and entertainment world of RWG with their legendary hospitality.
It is also at level four that you will find the the Malaysian Food Street, a vast food hall that hearkens back to the glorious past where street food was the only rage. Here, it features Malaysia’s finest hawker fare spread over 40,000 sq ft, with 1,000 seats and five distinct zones, namely Little India, Malacca, Teluk Intan, Kuching and Chinatown. And to furtehr add ambience, each zone is decorated with replicas of objects reminiscent of the time of our forefathers.
We look forward to the opening of the alfresco dining area, but already in place and serving eager beavers like us are San Francisco Coffee, Pappa Rich, Mr Lok Lok, Zok Noodle House, BarBQ Plaza, Go Noodle House, Palsaik, Zok Noodles House and Ah Yat Kitchen.
So now you know the story behind SkyAvenue Mall, let's get to the part you've been waiting for, the 36-HOUR FOOD TRAIL. In orer for us to get to as many outlets as possible, we teamed up with food blogging power-couple Mak & Venny. We did this so that we could share the responsibility of not wasting food! Now remember guys and gals, a lot fo effort went into growing food and transporting it all the way to our dinner plates, it would be a sin to waste food. But I reckon we did well!

Starbucks Reserve Coffee
Our first stop was Starbucks Coffee Reserve. This place had a wonderful ambience, set away from the bustling crowd outside. They offer premium coffee here and the barista explained to us at length about the differences of their specially roasted coffee beans. Their reserve coffee each has a distinct character of their own, blending good taste and aroma in one perfect combination. It is however limited for a period of time, so coffee lovers ought to try it before it all finishes!
Inside Scoop
Our next stop was the Inside Scoop, a local artisanal ice creamery. They hand-make their ice cream using fresh ingredients without the addition of any artificial flavouring or preservatives. These are made in small batches to ensure freshness. They also offer these AMAZING WAFFLES! You can have these drizzled with chocolate syrup and topped with your favorite ice cream flavor. My fav, is of course the NUTELLA WAFFLE. :-D
Just Heavenly
Since we were nearby and still doing good, we stopped at Just Heavenly for some delicious cakes. They specialize in novelty and celebratory cakes, and as you can see here, the Red Velvet and Chocolate Cake were our top choices for an early afternoon tea!
dal.komm Coffee
If you are a fan of the Korean Drama Descendents of the Sun, then you would have heard of dal.komm Coffee. This Korean franchise has found its way to Singapore and now Malaysia, and is proving to be a fast growing enterprise. They offer 4 distinct blends of roasted coffee, each made with the La Cimbali M39, the most popular coffee machine from Milano, Italy. You can find this outlet at the SkyAvenue Rooftop Terrace.
Aside from coffee however, dal.komm also offers tea lattes, chocolate, Kiwi and Strawberry juices, and frappes. The highlight of our visit at dal.komm has got to be the Salted Egg Lava Cruffin!
Canton-i
Canton-i offers authentic Hong Kong cuisine, and for the discerning diner, this place has got some of the best foods in SkyAvenue. Canton-i is the second brand under the Dragon-i Group of Restaurants, which is renowned for Shanghainese cuisine. They use freshly imported ingredients and condiments flown in weekly to maintain the quality and taste of their foods.
While we were here, we had the opportunity to try their Roasted Goose, Congee, Wonton with Wonton Noodles and Roast Pork Belly. We cleaned up everything!
Tian Ma Bird Nest
Our next stop was the illustrious Tian Ma Bird Nest, for a bowl of their precious Bird Nest soup. Coming all the way from Kedah, their products are meticulously screened and cleaned by hand without the use of chemicals. They are packaged exclusively. We were given the opportunity to try this rare delicacy, with the Bird Nest being served boiled with either Pear or Ginseng. You can find Tian Ma Bird Nest at the same level with the SkyWay Cable Car station.
Koong Woh Tong
This prolific outlet can be found all over Klang Valley, but in SkyAvenue it is located next to Tian Ma where they offer their famous Herbal Jelly for eating, known as "Gui Ling Gao". They also have herbal tea for drinking, the most famous of course being "Ya Sei Mei" and "Wong Lo Kat". It was a much welcome relief after a long hot day, and it helped to cool us down. They offer 20 types of Herbal Teas here, each with a different taste and health benefit.
DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe
Ever fancied having a meal with a Superman, Batman or even Wonder Woman theme? Well, at DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe you can do this, and more! Their menu is filled with fantastic offerings, each creatively named after one of the many heroes and villains from the DC Comics universe.
It was really fancy! We tried something called the Metropolis Face Off Burger, which is a Chicken patty burger topped with pineapple and eggs. We also had a drink called Nightwing's Elixir which was a blue curacao soda with passion fruits pearl and an interesting spicy balinese seafood spaghetti called Mera's Ocean Magic.
Ah Yip Herbal Soup
This outlet is famous for their foods which are cooked and infused with herbs and Ginseng. While here, we were offered the Ginseng Stew Chicken Soup, Ipoh Bak Kut Teh and a flavourful dish called the Bean Paste Duck. By now however, I was struggling with a serious Food Coma and sat there stupefied whilst everybody laughed at me, lols. Despite eating the whole day, I can report that their foods are really delicious and is reputed to offer many health benefits.
San Francisco Coffee
San Francisco Coffee can be found at the rooftop terrace of SkyAvenue, where the delicious cold air helped to revitalize my then sluggish mind. They offer freshly hand-brewed coffee, where they claim it to be the World's Top of the Crop - the top 5% of the world's coffee production. All of their foods are ready for take-away, which means instead of a dine-in option only, you can cart your goodies to be enjoyed outside or even as supper back at your hotel. We took away some great sandwiches and chicken pasta!
DÔME Cafe
I love DÔME. It was the restaurant of my first date in KL. Unfortunately it was also the restaurant where I had a break-up. LOLz. Jokes aside, DÔME offers some pretty amazing comfort food over the years, and I am glad to say unlike some other outlets, they have maintained a high standard of consistency in service and foods offered.
Founded in Perth, Australia in 1993, DÔME has everything you need under one roof. On the Food side, they have the All Day Breakfast, Fish, Sandwiches, Soups, Salads and even little treats for the young ones. As for Beverages, they offer Coffee, Tea, Espreski, Fruit Smoothies, Milkshakes and cooling iced drinks. It's like I said, they're all very comforting food, the kind you go for if you want a hearty meal after a long day.
We explained our predicament to the store manager, and he kindly provided us with a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful finger food platter! There was a nice spicy pasta, mushroom soup with crouton, and even fish. We ate these with relish!
Morganfield's - Home of Sticky Bones
Our last stop of the day was at Morganfield's - Home of Sticky Bones. I have not tried this outlet before, so my first order of business was of course to get a stiff drink from the bar~ while I got busy with my Gin & Tonic, the others had beer, mojitos, soda and smoothies. For foods, we gave it the good ol' fashioned college try. Starting with the Onion Blossom, Bacon Wrapped Meatballs and the highlight of the night, the Naughty Spare Ribs!
We were quite knackered by then, so we called it quits and went back to the hotel. But for thsoe of you who want to give this place a try, I urge you to do so in a group cos it's more fun that way. They even helpfully provide an online menu which you can browse before heading over, have a gander at it here.
Wan Choi Yamcha
According to their website, Wan Choi Yamcha offers authentic Cantonese cuisine. This was literally a showstopper, it had a very nice (and big) layout on the Ground Floor of the SkyAvenue, and the ambience was so luxurious and inviting. They also open very early too, me and the gang showed up in the morning for a proper Dim Sum Brekkie!
We were offered some really cute Pau(s), but the best part of the meal here was the Crispy Tomato Pork Belly, Cod Fish in light soy sauce and Spinach with Century Egg soup.
Babajia
Another first for me, BABAJIA can be found opposite Wan Choi Yamcha on the ground floor of SkyAvenue. This restaurant offers authentic Baba & Nyonya foods and is open 24 HOURS a day, 7 days a week. If you're hunting for food, remember this place!
BABAJIA left a special memory for me, because I only tried two things here, and that was the Char Koey Teow which was AMAZING and the Bubur Cha Cha which is my all-time favourite Malaysian dessert.
Madame Waffle
Madame Waffle sells... well, you know, waffles? They have Hot & Cheesy waffles, Banana and Nutella waffles, Peanut Butter and Salted Caramel waffles and even a MUSANG DURIAN CREME BRULEE waffle. And if you are looking for drinks, they also offer coffee, teas, Japanese Matcha and Belgian Chocolate drinks.
Royale Vietnam
We had an extragavanza of a feast here at the Royale Vietnam. I first heard of them opening at the Starhill, Bukit Bintang back in 2011 and they wowed the crowds. Up here at RWG, they have carried over their reputation and impressed us with their hospitality and culinary masterpieces.
When in Vietnam, a must try is of course their Beef "Pho", or Beef Noodle Soup. The soup stock was yummies to the extreme, and this was coupled with an amazing array of dishes ranging from Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Prawns, Mekong Delta Fried Fish, Crispy Golden Chicken Pumpkin and much more. To my mind however, the highlight of this visit was the charred Steamed Prawns with Young Coconut, served rimming a skinned coconut with a coconut based soup inside, while everything was on fire. Seriously impressed here.
Tokyo Secret
We left Royale Vietnam and stopped by Tokyo Secret to grab our goodie bags, which were specially baked tarts and a cheese based drink. They proved delicious! Tokyo Secret uses cheese imported directly from Japan, but I think the secret to their cheese tarts are not just on ingredients, but in delivering freshly baked cheese tarts of surpassing quality.
GO Noodle House
Sometimes, you just have to offer just one thing and be really good at it. At GO Noodle House, they offer silky smooth noodles served in bowls of steaming aromatic soup that is sure to delight the palate on a cold day.
Palsaik Korean BBQ
The food here was really good, and I made a second visit after my first time here and will be covering this outlet in another separate blog post. Palsaik offers some really affordable din-in option, but the highlight has got to be the slices of pork that are grilled right before you and then cut up into bite sized chunks by your very own in-house chef. The meals here are rather large though, and is designed for a minimum of two persons, so if you wanna try this outlet, come with a friend or six and go for the wines and sojus!
Our battle report. At the end of the day, we only managed to cover 18 outlets! |
We were given a mission to cover 28 outlets in 36 hours, but we only managed to get to 18 outlets. We had a lotta fun though, thank you RWG and the PR Team for inviting us to take up the 36-Hour food Trail!
