Senikome Peng Heng, An RWG East Coast Arts & Cultural Centre
Resorts World Genting has long been known as a steadfast patron of the Fine Arts. And the latest attraction to grace the resort is SeniKome Péng Hēng, an art gallery and cultural center showcasing traditional arts from the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Also alternatively known as the East Coast Arts & Cultural Center, the thematic SeniKome Péng Hēng features visual and performing art forms traditionally practiced in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Everyday Food I Love was delighted to be part of the assemblage of Bloggers and Social Media Influencers invited by Resorts world Genting for an exclusive preview of the new cultural and art center.
DID YOU KNOW? SeniKome is a translation of “Our Art” in the Pahang local dialect. Péng Hēng was used to refer to the East Coast regions of the Malay Peninsula back in the Ming Dynasty in the 1520’s.
It was pretty much how you would imagine an art tour would take place. We had out guides to walk us through the gallery and display areas, filled with art from the East Coast featuring a myriad of things that run the gamut of local crafts, fashions, food, music, and games.
As with all new ventures, SeniKome Péng Hēng aspires to cultivate more East Coast Arts & Culture. In line with this, they are offering immersive programmes to enhance the visiting experience, such as live Wayang Kulit shows and Batik displays. There is also an experiential area for various traditional games where visitors can participate in Congkak and Batu Seremban.
Beginning this weekend, SeniKome Péng Hēng will be hosting a series of shows featuring visual and performing arts from the East Coast of Malaysia until September 2017. One highlight is Joget Gamelan, a 17th century classical dance that originates from the courts of Riau and Lingga. It became popular specifically in Pahang and Terengganu, and today 33 Gamelan dances are still in practice including Timan Burung, Ayak-ayak and Togok Rompin.
There will be art forms showcased every weekend. Kicking off the series will be a demo on Batik Canting, happening this weekend. Visitors will get to witness the beauty of batik-making, a technique of hand-dyeing fabrics by using wax as a dye repellent.
Silk screen painting, also known as Serigraphy or Silkscreening, will also feature prominently on 26 & 27 August 2017. With origins in China dating back a thousand years ago, it is considered among the most versatile of all printing processes. A watercolour painting demo will be held on 31 August and 1 September. Joget Gamelan is the main highlight on 2 and 3 September, a demo on Sketching on 9 and 10 September, Pottery on 16 and 17 September, and a Weaving demo from 22 to 24 September.
There is also an East Coast Art & Souvenir Shop that offers fine textiles and pewter ware items. The shop also serve traditional dishes like the signature Nasi Kerabu or Keropok Lekor. Refreshing drinks are also served, with choices ranging from drinks made from Pandan leaf extracts, Mint leaves, Lemongrass, Lime, Honey and Assam Boi.
The SeniKome Péng Hēng is located on Level 3 in First World Plaza, right across Food Factory. It opens daily from 8.30am to 5.30pm, and guided tours are also available daily, at 10.30am, 1.30pm and 4.30pm. Each session is 30 minutes long.
