YouMiQi Cuisine @ Old Klang Road, KL South

Feeling up to having some good old-fashioned Cantonese and Shunde cuisine served in comfort and with good service? Come and visit YouMiQi Cuisine, a popular restaurant most talked about in the chinese community here in the heart of KL, Old Klang Road. It is pretty hard to miss, it is nearby the Mid Valley Megamall and boasts jockeyed parking.

DID YOU KNOW? Guangdong is the most prosperous province in China. It is predominated by Cantonese speaking chinese people, and is the home Cantonese Opera, some forms of Wushu @ Kung Fu and of course, Cantonese or 粤菜 Yuècài cuisine. It is currently the most widely served chinese cuisine in the world, and the flavours are mostly mild, fresh and sweet. But did you know, a branch of Cantonese cooking is Shunde cuisine. The Chinese people known as the Shunde employs manifold complicated cooking techniques to produce dishes of marvellous presentation and taste.

I have been to many restaurants that serves Cantonese cuisine, but a recurring name among the food blogging community is YouMiQi. It has been featured in many articles over the last few years, so it was only fitting that I should pay my homage to this restaurant and try everything for myself. It was just lucky for me too, as they have a new menu for us to explore!

This restaurant has open air-conditioned seatings on the ground floor and private dining rooms on the first floor. The place is cool and clean, and the pleasant aroma of food is not discernable as it is well-ventilated.
Herbal Chicken Feet and Pickled Cucumber
These are interesting appetisers that often greet patrons of the restaurant. The chicken feet are cooked with wolfberries, red dates and dong gui whereas the cucumbers are straightforward crunchy pickles.
YouMiQi Chinese New Year Prosperity Toss @ Yee Sang 👍
NEW! This mighty platter of Yee Sang will take all your combined effort to toss, all the better to usher in the new year!

CNY Shunde Seafood Hotpot 👍👍
This signature dish of YouMiQi comprises of a large copper wok which rests in the middle of the table. A small gas stove is cunningly worked between the lazy susan and the table where it is primed to bring the hotpot to a boil! Foods simmering in this wok are kept constantly hot, and a special savory broth is continuously poured over the ensemble of ingredients when required to prevent the wok from drying up.

And if you would like to ask for a different hotpot ingredient, have no fear! YouMiQi’s signature dish can cater for as many as 2 to 10 persons, with an impressive one hundred (100+) over ingredients to choose from. A customised hotpot with a combo of your choosing! This quickly became my favourite, especially when combined with the noodles in Scallion sauce.
Cuttlefish with Salted Egg Yolk
This dish can be found in many chinese restaurants, the texture of the cuttlefish was chewy, with the salted egg yolk adding a nice savory taste.
Assorted Seafood with Diced Tofu
This dish was mildly flavoured, where the soft tofu went well with the light sauce.

Fried Stuffed Beancurd with Salted Egg Yolk
Tofu lovers will not be disappointed with this, as the beancurd is generously stuffed and fried to biteable perfection.
Noodle with Scallion sauce 👍
These noodles are the perfect alternative to plain steamed rice, especially when eaten in tandem with the Shunde Seafood Hotpot. It is very easy, just dish a bowlful of noodles into the copper wok and let it simmer in the broth for a half a minute, then fish it out with a soup ladle or noodle sieve and take it hot!

3 Variety Pan Fried Fish Paste
Fish paste is used to top 3 types of vegetables and deep fried. The resulting dish is savory and makes a good side dish in tandem with noodles or rice.
Cantonese Pancake
Traditional cantonese pancakes are featured in restaurants as dessert, but these are packed with lotus paste and lots of nutty goodness.

Red Bean Milk Custard 👍
If you like milk freshly made into a smooth light custard, then this dessert is perfect for you. It is mildly sweet, and the sweet red beans provide an interesting contrast in texture to the smooth custard.
DID YOU KNOW? There are Eight (8) Culinary Traditions when it comes to Chinese Cuisine. They are the Guangdong (Cantonese, 粤菜 Yuècài), Sichuan (川菜 Chuāncài), Hunan (湘菜 Xiāngcài), Anhui (徽菜 Huīcài), Fujian (闽菜 Mǐncài), Zhejiang (浙菜 Zhècài), Jiangsu(苏菜 Sūcài) and shandong (鲁菜 Lǔcài) cuisines. Each of these cuisines have their own unique flavours and strengths, and often makes use of unique ingredients found in their respective regions in China.
Marvin with Ms. Liu Bi yun, the Manager of the restaurant.
There are not many restaurants in Klang Valley that features Shunde cuisine. Instead of flying to Guangdong, China to try this particular cuisine, why not save yourself the trip and try it here in Old Klang Road instead? ~ Marv.7
