Every year the Rice Dumpling Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar to honour Qu Yuan, a famous scholar-poet in ancient China who lived from 340-278 BC. Qu Yuan was also minister in his home state of Chu. He had advocated reforms but the Emperor would not listen to his advice.
In 278 B.C., when Qu Yuan heard that his home state had been invaded, he jumped into the river and drowned. The people rushed to the river to rescue their beloved minister. Too late to save Qu Yuan, according to the legend, they threw steamed rice wrapped in reed leaf into the river to feed Qu Yuan in the afterlife and to keep the fish from consuming his body.
