Unduk Ngadau Pesta Kaamatan Kampung Kuranji @ Kota Marudu

The Kaamatan festival, also known as Harvest festival, is an annual event in the cultural life of the Kadazandusuns of Sabah since time immemorial. The celebration usually started from 1st of May in kampung (village) and mukim (district) level, while the state level celebration falls on May 30 and May 31 every year.

Unduk Ngadau is a traditional beauty pageant normally held during the Kaamatan cultural event. The title comes from the ethnic word Runduk Tadau which means 'the girl crowned by the sunlight'. Unduk Ngadau is one of the most recognizable cultural events in Sabah and the beauty pageant is unique to the state.

The Unduk Ngadau beauty contest was started to pay respect to Huminodun, the sacrificed daughter of the Kadazandusun spirits Kinorohingan and Suminodun. It is believed that she was the one who taught the priestesses, known as locally as Bobohizans their ritual mantras which exist today. (source from: Wikipedia)

During 6th of May 2012, Kaamatan celebration was held at Datuk George Sangkin's house in Kampung Kuranji. Apart from enjoying the feast with traditional food and observing the beauty pageant contest, there are also traditional sport competitions such as tug of war, arm wrestling and catapult shooting being held.

The winners of the beauty pageant will be rewarded with cash gift.
