McDonald’s Iconic Toys Make a Comeback for Happy Meal 40th Anniversary Celebration
For 40 years, the Happy Meal has been the symbol of shared moments of happiness for families around the world. To commemorate this milestone, McDonald’s Malaysia is launching the limited edition Surprise Happy Meal, featuring some of the most popular Happy Meal toys from the last four decades. The Surprise Happy Meal will be available at McDonalds restaurants nationwide starting 28 November, while stocks last.
“We are thrilled to bring Malaysians on this walk down memory lane with some of our most iconic Happy Meal toys series from the past such as Beanie Babies and Tamagotchi. Both children and adults alike will enjoy this throwback to the toys from the 1980s and 1990s, which is sure to bring back a sense of nostalgia, especially for customers who grew up enjoying Happy Meal,” said Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald’s Malaysia, Melati Abdul Hai.
Since it was first introduced as a Circus Wagon Happy Meal in June 1979 in the U.S., the Happy Meal global footprint has expanded to more than 38,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries around the globe – with the iconic toy still a beloved staple – serving as a symbol of surprise, playfulness and fun.
Each Surprise Happy Meal will contain one of the following limited edition toys, which customers have had the strongest connection to over the years:
• Cowboy McNugget (McDonald’s): 1988
• Fireman McNugget (McDonald’s): 1988
• Mail Carrier McNugget (McDonald’s): 1988
• Hamburger Changeable (McDonald’s): 1989
• Grimace (McDonald’s): 1990
• Dino Happy Meal Box Changeable (McDonald’s): 1991
• McDonald’s Hot Wheels Thunderbird (Mattel): 1993
• Hamburglar (McDonald’s): 1995
• Space Jam Bugs Bunny (Warner Brothers): 1996
• Patti the Platypus (Ty Beanie Baby): 1997
• Tamagotchi (Bandai): 1998
• My Little Pony (Hasbro): 1998
• Furby (Hasbro): 1999

“Unboxing a Happy Meal has always been a family affair, and it creates a special bonding time for parents and their kids. To us, the Happy Meal is not just another menu item that we offer – it also helps to create ‘feel good moments’ among families,” added Melati.
Bringing families together has always been a big part of the McDonald’s culture. Through Parties @ McD, McDonald’s Malaysia provides a platform for Malaysians of all ages to host various celebrations such as birthdays, reunions or even farewells, at selected restaurants nationwide. These celebrations serve as an avenue for people to come together to create and experience shared moments with family, friends, and loved ones.
In addition to Parties @ McD, McDonald’s Malaysia is also opening up its restaurants for Meetings @ McD, for customers who are interested in having meetings outside of their offices.
Customers can book a McDonald’s restaurant as the venue of choice for parties or meetings through the McDonald’s app, which can be downloaded on both the Play Store and Apple Store, or at the McDonald’s Malaysia website at www.mcdonalds.com.my.
