Mr. Pie Man: Too Good Not To Share

There are people who eat, and then there is me who look at what we are eating. Currently on my mind, good old fashioned pies. Every now and then, I get in the mood for a decent pie. I am always reminded of a favourite scene in Men In Black where K tells J, "You gotta let the pie work slick." Back to pre-pandemic days, I used to have my pies at Gloria Jean's or at Hilton Hotel. Ladies and Gentleman, imagine my surprise when I found out their pies are supplied by Mr. Pieman! And you can get them directly from them too. So it was when I came across a random post on Facebook advertising about the availability of locally made pies, I reached out and found myself invited to their headquarters to have a good look at their operations.

“It could be argued that there is an element of entertainment in every pie, as every pie is inherently a surprise by virtue of its crust.”
- Janet Clarkson, Pie: A Global History

Mr. Pieman was founded by Mr. Thomas Romal and he and his associates have been baking pies since way back in 2004. There have been some coverage on the Edge and you can still find a recording of an interview he did with BFM here. A very important milestone was when Mr. Pieman went online back in December 2020. Now dear reader, you can get your pie fix directly from them too! They have an impressive range of pies to choose from in their online menu.

What should you look out for in a pie? Well, for starters, It has got to have a decent crust that is firm, the kind that when you bite into it, it does not disintegrate and spill the precious fillings. There is something about pastries that you could eat by hand without the aid of fancy plating or fiddle-some cutlery. Some people go so far as to eat the pie fillings and leave the crust behind, I am glad to say this is not the case with these pies, especially the Pecan Pie with the cookie-like crust.

Secondly, the filling should be well-cooked, AND, I cannot stress this too much, you can never have too much filling inside a good pie. But there is such a thing as too much air. Remember folks, it is a pie, not a balloon. My favourite is definitely their Lamb Keema Pies.

Mr. Pieman also has seasonal promotions and offers at bundle prices, so be sure to check them out on their social media pages.
